The 11th Hour Bid (A Hard Bid Simulation Activity)

9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Approved for 5.5 LUIHSW

Bid day can be stressful! As new information comes in or questions about project scope arise, even the best plans can quickly become chaotic.

In this workshop, you'll gain insight into the hard bid process, learn new skills, and have a chance to practice your strategy without the real-life risk of potentially losing your bid.

We'll work through real-life scenarios and throw curveballs your way so that you can feel more confident in your approach to building a winning bid.

By attending this session, you will:

  • Learn quote analysis techniques.
  • Discuss the bid preparation process.
  • Experience the hard bid process.
  • Understand the importance of risk analysis

Why do a Hard Bid Simulation?

Many estimators for general contractors spend at least some part of their careers helping their company get work by submitting a "hard bid" proposal. This typically requires that the general contractor prepare a single lump sum bid for an entire project.

The general contractor often has 35 or more different trades of work involved in a project for which they receive subcontractor bids. With five, ten, or more proposals submitted for each trade, and most of those submitted on bid day, the general contractor has to review dozens, if not hundreds, of bids in a few hours. This program aims to simulate the last couple hours of this intense and sometimes hectic process – the "11th hour"!

Many owners, architects, trade contractors, suppliers, and other industry members become involved in hard bids in one way or another but have not had the opportunity to see the process from the perspective of the general contractor. Some general contractor estimators have not participated in this type of work process either if they are new to the field or work for companies that do not typically participate in hard bid procurement. This simulation provides the opportunity to see how it is done – without the risk!

Adapting to Change, Leading Toward the Future

9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Note: This pre-conference session is specifically for active Chapter, Region, Board of Director volunteers, and aspiring leaders.

Embracing change can be challenging, especially when you’re a volunteer leader stretched for time and resources.

Join us for this immersive session where we'll debunk traditional beliefs on governance, chapter management, and attracting and maintaining new audiences. You will leave with improved confidence in leading and gain specific strategies you can implement within your chapter or region.

Participating in this hands-on session includes 1.5 hours of pre-work to support your on-site learning. The coursework will be available on May 15, 2024.

By attending this session, you will:

  • Learn core board leadership competencies like goal setting, strategic thinking, and common (yet often misunderstood) board responsibilities.
  • Discuss the importance of change management and the risks associated with maintaining the status quo by learning tactics for driving change and overcoming resistance.
  • Identify strategies to attract and retain unique audiences by understanding the diverse needs of different segments.  Plus, you’ll develop at least one tactic to apply to your chapter or region.

The Experts: The session will be divided into two parts, each led by a dynamic leadership expert who will guide you through the process of change.

  • Part one: Bill Charney

  • Part two: Dr. Brandi Baldwin, Ph.D.
