Smart contracts with blockchain technology help ensure that shared digital records are safe, transparent, and all modifications are identifiable. Are you using this tool to protect specifications? Join us for a look at how to increase the value of specifications by using smart contracts that leverage blockchain, formally known as distributed ledger technology (DLT). Industry heavy-hitters such as the Associated General Contractors (AGC) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have announced their move to an online blockchain service for the contract documents they endorse, and more organizations are following suit. In this session we’ll discuss the processes, technologies, and best practices of how smart contracts can help position and increase the value of construction documents in the digital age.

How Products Change: What it Means for Specification and Procurement

The number of building products in the market today has more than doubled in the past decade. We have also seen an exponential increase in the frequency of change of key product attributes including lead time and cost. Using data from the lighting industry, we will examine the varying rate of change along each of these dimensions and explore the implications on current specification and procurement practices. Finally, we will discuss the role new technology can play to enable practitioners to adapt and thrive in a more dynamic data environment.

Decarbonizing Projects: Saving the World, One Specification at a Time

Among the many realities that affect the built environment on any given day is the fact that the design and construction industry must be more globally sustainable. Over the past two years, the specifications department at the international architectural and engineering firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) has been hard at work “de-carbonizing” and “de-chemicalizing” our master specifications, revising them toward more sustainable, responsible projects. Join us as we share our work, what we have learned, and what we think still needs to be done.

Raising the Roof: The Story Behind SoFi Stadium’s Colossal Canopy Enclosure

The monumental roof canopy of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA, spans over three state-of-the-art venues with a total area of more than a million square feet. It features a lightweight, transparent ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) enclosure that addresses a range of design and performance criteria. This presentation will provide intriguing insights into the design, engineering, and construction processes and innovations developed to manage the roof enclosure’s massive scale and complexity—including the use of digital workflows and 3D modeling and analysis workflows from concept to fabrication.

Starting with a little direction and a blank page, we’ll explore a specifier’s approach to creating a new specification section, live, and without the use of a master guide to reference. We’ll examine the process from start to finish, the research behind the words, and how changes throughout construction are incorporated within the structure of a specification section. This lighthearted and informative presentation will appeal to the palate of everyone, from the seasoned design or construction professional to the newest team member.

How to Manage Moisture in Concrete: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Environmental regulations help protect our planet, but at times they come at the expense of something else.... in this case, the durability of adhesives used in the flooring industry. While less toxic, today's products are more prone to moisture, causing billions of dollars in failures. Since testing and remediation have become more common, many solutions have surfaced—some good, some bad, and some just plain ugly. In this session you'll learn about the different methods that are available to mitigate moisture, whether you're dealing with a new slab or one that's 100 years old.

Four Ways to Optimize Prefabricated Building Enclosures

Prefabricated building enclosure systems continue to increase in popularity because they can help project teams streamline construction schedules, reduce construction costs, and improve assembly quality—but only if properly selected, designed, and specified. One of the key challenges in optimizing the value of prefabricated wall panels is selecting a strategy early in the design phase to appropriately set the expectations for material selection, joint detailing, performance criteria, and testing. In this session we’ll synthesize the wide range of prefabrication approaches into four strategies that vary from the most field-intensive to the least field-intensive. We’ll also compare the advantages and drawbacks of each strategy and summarize the key design and specification considerations. Attendees will be able to evaluate the overall impact of prefabricated exterior wall systems on their project and select an optimal strategy.

Real-World Applications for UniFormat^® Project Specifications

Some architects have heard of UniFormat^® and preliminary project descriptions (PPD), but few have actually written UniFormat^® project descriptions or specifications or experienced the benefits this tool provides both early in the project and throughout the entire design process. Uniformat® is a standardized means of organizing, classifying, and describing building systems as collections of assemblies rather than individual components. Designed by estimators as a tool to assist in conceptual early-phase cost estimating, its true power emerges when used as a design decision-making tool and as a repository for documenting the owner's project requirements. This session will give you hands-on experience writing PPDs and help you understand the value of UniFormat® and PPDs beyond the "preliminary."

3. Formulate assembly and component descriptions suitable to a project's level of development.

Parapet Perplexities: Water, Air, Thermal & Vapor Control

The parapet is so much more than the intersection of roof and wall. It’s also the junction where building aesthetic meets structural performance, air and moisture management, energy efficiency, construction trade sequencing, and operational maintenance. Each of these perspectives is critical for the long-term performance of the building, but they are often at odds with one another. At such a critical interface, proper parapet detailing, installation coordination, and execution are paramount. In this session, we’ll guide you through these concepts using a full-scale mockup of several different parapet constructions.

Ready or not, our role as product representatives is changing as the construction industry advances further into the realm of electronic information. Today, many A/E firms no longer have in-house specifiers, and while many are outsourced to independent practitioners, others are relegated to lesser-experienced architects, leading to poorly coordinated documents. Good product reps help architects and specifiers find proven design solutions—particularly those who tend to rely on electronic information as a substitute for knowledge exchange. This workshop will explore what the internet can't tell you and discuss the difference between information bites and actual knowledge transfer. Join with leading reps and peers as we share innovative ideas and learn best practices from each other. Let's shape the product representative of the future.
