Four Ways to Optimize Prefabricated Building Enclosures

Prefabricated building enclosure systems continue to increase in popularity because they can help project teams streamline construction schedules, reduce construction costs, and improve assembly quality—but only if properly selected, designed, and specified. One of the key challenges in optimizing the value of prefabricated wall panels is selecting a strategy early in the design phase to appropriately set the expectations for material selection, joint detailing, performance criteria, and testing. In this session we’ll synthesize the wide range of prefabrication approaches into four strategies that vary from the most field-intensive to the least field-intensive. We’ll also compare the advantages and drawbacks of each strategy and summarize the key design and specification considerations. Attendees will be able to evaluate the overall impact of prefabricated exterior wall systems on their project and select an optimal strategy.

Real-World Applications for UniFormat® Project Specifications

Some architects have heard of UniFormat® and preliminary project descriptions (PPD), but few have actually written UniFormat® project descriptions or specifications or experienced the benefits this tool provides both early in the project and throughout the entire design process. Uniformat® is a standardized means of organizing, classifying, and describing building systems as collections of assemblies rather than individual components. Designed by estimators as a tool to assist in conceptual early-phase cost estimating, its true power emerges when used as a design decision-making tool and as a repository for documenting the owner's project requirements. This session will give you hands-on experience writing PPDs and help you understand the value of UniFormat® and PPDs beyond the "preliminary."

Parapet Perplexities: Water, Air, Thermal & Vapor Control

The parapet is so much more than the intersection of roof and wall. It’s also the junction where building aesthetic meets structural performance, air and moisture management, energy efficiency, construction trade sequencing, and operational maintenance. Each of these perspectives is critical for the long-term performance of the building, but they are often at odds with one another. At such a critical interface, proper parapet detailing, installation coordination, and execution are paramount. In this session, we’ll guide you through these concepts using a full-scale mockup of several different parapet constructions.
